Severe acne can leave young people scarred mentally and physically. Yet recent evidence suggests that referral to secondary care is often delayed. Moreover, antibiotics are often used inappropriately, which could drive resistance in Propionibacterium acnes, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria.
