Long-Term Results of Urethrovaginal Fistula Repair Using the Transvaginal Approach Background: Long-term follow-up of patients after urethrovaginal fistula (UVF) repair is necessary for the proper evaluation of the efficacy and functional results of the transvaginal approach. Patients and Methods: In this study we evaluated the long-term results of UVF closure in 21 patients. The average follow-up duration was 47.5 ± 10.9 months. Transvaginal fistula repair was done in all cases. Results: Successful closure of the fistula was achieved in 19 of 21 (90.47%) cases after primary repair. Two patients underwent secondary fistula closure. All women had no recurrence 47.5 ± 10.9 months after surgery, but 11 of 21 (52.3%) patients developed stress urinary incontinence (SUI). SUI was objectively cured in 7 patients; 2 patients showed improvement and 2 remained incontinent. Obstructive voiding was detected in 2 patients. Urethra dilation and urethrolysis were used for management of obstruction. Conclusion: Long-term results showed that transvaginal repair of an UVF are an effective and safe procedure. Almost half of the patients developed SUI after successful fistula repair.
