This editorial article for the double special issue of Progress in Industrial Ecology, 'Theoretical dimensions of industrial ecology', reviews the ten accepted contributions. We find four themes that we perceive as challenges for the theory of industrial ecology in terms of its contribution to sustainability science and sustainable development: 1) development of the science of industrial ecology; 2) the role of industrial ecology within and the contribution of industrial ecology to sustainability science and sustainable development; 3) management and policy aspects of industrial ecology; 4) industrial ecology and trans-disciplinary cooperation with society. We invite the scholars in the field, and also in other related fields, to respond to and comment on this double special issue of Progress in Industrial Ecology.
