The mechanism of energy dissipation in a jointed cantilever structure with bolts has been investigated for mild steel, aluminium and copper materials. Experiments have been conducted to validate the numerical analysis. The interface pressure and its distribution characteristics, relative spacing between the connecting bolts, material, kinematic coefficient of friction and dynamic slip ratio at the interfaces, diameter of the bolts and frequency of vibration are found to play vital roles on the damping capacity of fabricated structures and this capacity can be improved substantially by maintaining uniform intensity of pressure distribution at the interfaces along with more number of layers. Further, it is found that the layered aluminium structures contribute more to the damping capacity compared to other materials due to higher interface friction and lower static bending stiffness. This concept can be used in selecting a proper material for the structures depending on the required damping in real applications.
