Developed, developing and emerging economies have different requirements from CSR, and similarly, varying levels of support from institutions and the state. In developed nations, there are already well established and understood frameworks within which organizations have to operate with an accepted level of responsibility. Furthermore, in developed economies, there is greater power in the hands of the consumer to demand change when an issue or event is deemed to be unacceptable. With stronger legal systems, and typically a robust democratic government, there are multiple avenues for CSR to be adapted, improved and enforced on organizations wishing to do business there. In emerging and developing nations, however, there are much lower levels of governmental oversight and influence on corporate behavior.
