Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to recall the author's experience as a student of David D. Monieson. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on personal recollections. Monieson's pedagogy, philosophy, and leadership in learning are described. Findings – Monieson's most significant gift was that he treated his students with intellectual respect. Originality/value – This brief note complements other biographical material about Monieson by describing in some detail the experiences of one of his former students.
