To consider se things in some depth helps to understand problems we have to face when designing new buildings, commissioning design of new buildings, criticising design of new buildings, preserving and restoring old buildings or just fighting for ir preservation, activities, one or more of which, all of us here indulge in. years ago, when I first knew Colin McWilliam at Cambridge, word 'conservation' applied to architecture did not exist. Buildings were maintained, repaired, restored and so preserved, but never conserved. New buildings in vicinity of old buildings had to be well designed like new buildings anywhere. idea that y were somehow a special case, which had to take into account old buildings, did not exist. Yet study of old buildings history of architecture far from being ignored, as those who want to re-write twentieth century architectural history would have us believe, was encouraged and indeed pursued passionately by some of us.
