Architecture and books are inextricably linked; brochures, books, pamphlets, catalogues and such like can be powerful allies in the dissemination of ideas. Propagandist architects as diverse as Andrea Palladio, Robert Adam, Le Corbusier and Rem Koolhaas have all recognised this maxim. Indeed, Koolhaas even presented an entire lecture at the Architectural Association on the typographical and compositional ideas informing the design of his seminal book S,M,L,XL which extends to 1,347 pages and catalogues a '... novel about architecture, conceived as a free-fall in the space of the typographic imagination combining essays, manifestos, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city' ... (no less). The protracted nature of the publishing process (choice of format, type of font, grade of paper, selection of illustrations, etc.) can be agonising and expensive. In order to recoup some of this outlay, the 'product' must then be promoted. Certainly Edinburgh, at least every August, can offer more than the orthodox book signing session. The Edinburgh International Book Festival may not capture the banner headlines or attract the glitterati to the same degree as
