James Craig had aspiratis, aspiratis which are all too clearly revealed in the portrait by David Allan which adorns the cover of this useful publicati the work of eight different authors writing in a variety of combinatis published to celebrate the bicentenary of Craig's death. There he sits in his elegant yellow silk waistcoat, lace cravat and sober but carefully matching bottle-green jacket with lace cuffs at the wrists. Silk-stockinged legs, with what looks like a pearl-studded buckle the garter, swinging nchalantly in the centre of the picture, alg with the large silver buckles his shoes, proclaim that this is a gentleman, not an artisan. In his right hand a delicate pair of dividers placed over the plan of his most famous creati, Edinburgh New Town, proclaims that the sitter is an architect, while an elevati of his design for the Physicians Hall in Edinburgh lies at his feet.
