Sanderson, Robert Adam and Scotland: Portrait of an Architect, HMSO, Edinburgh, 1992; Various authors, The Architecture of Robert Adam: Life, Death and Survival; the Works in Scotland, Edinburgh, The failure to mount a major, all-embracing exhibition to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Robert Adam, led to four attempts to fill the vacuum in Edinburgh in the summer of 1992. They were held at the General Register House, the National Library of Scotland, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland's headquarters, and the National Monuments Record of Scotland. The publications here under review were the fruits of three of these exhibitions, but none is strictly a catalogue, and, consequently, they can be judged on their own merits. formats of the three works reflect their very different contents. covers the whole of Adam's life; Brown's concentrates on one the publication of Diocletian's palace at Split in Croatia; the third approaches project, Adam's architecture from a multitude of angles in fifteen essays by thirteen contributors (including Brown and Sanderson).
