The man who emerges from Gillian Darley's punctilious new biography of architect Sir John Soane (1753—1837) is a highly complex figure: irascible, inconstant, jealous of his rivals' success, yet hard working, ingenious, and at times visionary. He was a proponent of an architectural idiom which could veer from austere Classicism to numinous Romanticism; he was an accomplished Gothick pasticheur. His style was so idiosyncratic it was constantly lambasted by critics of the day and he attracted few followers, yet his recent 'rediscovery' as Hero Architect has now installed him in the pantheon with such luminaries as Hawksmoor, Lutyens and Alexander 'Greek' Thompson. In fact, his stock has never been higher. Books and exhibitions continue to pour out and he is revered by academics and architects as an antiquarian, neo-classicist, seminal proto-modernist, and an inspiration for postmodernism. He is even credited with defining the role of the professional Architect.
