DEFINING AGRICULTURAL REGIONS IN RUSSIA: FUZZINESS IN MULTIVARIATE CLASSIFICATION OF HISTORICAL DATA This article evaluates the spatial distribution of the two known paths of social agrarian evolution in European Russia at the turn of the twentieth century using a technique known as fuzzy set analysis. First we sought to determine 'fuzzy boundaries' within which two distinctive types of economic development prevailed. These types are known as the manorial and the peasant types, or the 'Prussian' and the 'American' paths. This taxonomy of paths of agrarian evolution in pre-Revolutionary Russia has been commonly used since the beginning of the twentieth century. The new approach to the problem, based on the application of multidimensional data analysis, was developed in the 1970s and 1980s by the work of I. D. Koval'chenko and the author, who established a social agrarian typology of Russian provinces at the turn of twentieth century.1 This article concentrates on the capacity of a fuzzy classification algorithm to take account of expert information on the degree to which some provinces belong to one of the two types mentioned above.2 FUZZY SETS VS.
