On first reading the title of Mr Christie's book I was slightly dismayed; was it going to be yet another book looking at this already very well researched area? What else can be said? However, I was pleasantly surprised. This book is part of an extensive series published by Manchester University Press on a wide range of design issues. It looks at its fascinating subject from a cultural history perspective. It examines closely the type of people who were commissioning the houses and their political affiliations. (I do not think I had really understood fully the effect that being a Whig or a Tory had on the design and decoration of one's country seat.) Mr Christie deals clearly with every aspect of the country house including its furnishing, servants, art collections and entertainment. He wisely has enlisted the help of Pat Gardener to provide an erudite commentray on the oft-overlooked chapter on landscape, follies and villages. Not only is it a subject http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Architectural Heritage Edinburgh University Press
