Back Byte Back Byte ment means Electronic Records in Government Departments: an update from the Public Record Office Electronic records in government departments are public records. The definition of records in the Public Records Act 1958 leaves us in no doubt of this: 'records' includes not only written records but records conveying information by any other means whatsoever. This means that they are subject to the provisions of the Public Records Acts of 1958 and 1967. The 1958 Act places an statutory obligation on government departments to make proper arrangements for their records (1) It shall be the duty of every person responsible for public records of any description which are not in to make arrangements the Public Record Office for the selection of those records which ought to be permanently preserved and for their safe-keeping. .... (2) Every person shall perform his duties under this section under the guidance of the Keeper of Public Records and the said Keeper shall be responsible for co-ordinating and supervising all action taken under this section. Under the 1967 Act public records are made available to public inspection when they are 30 years old.
