Without the plan we have the sensation, so insupportable to man, of shapelessness, of poverty, of disorder, of wilfulness.’ The plan is the generator – that is essentially Andor Gomme and Alison Maguire’s thesis in this publication. Their energetic survey is enriched by over two hundred beautifully drawn 109 ) plans of houses dating from 1070 to the 1720s, the fruit of a year’s work by Robert Maguire. These superb drawings are reproduced at a consistent scale of 1 : 350 to illustrate the many varieties and forms of the country house.
