We Are Passing This Way But Once Gospel Hymns John Howard ton Smith ( 1880-1977) was born in Rowan County, North Carolina the son of ex-slaves. Long­ time lay minister and choir director of Broad Street Presbyterian Church, in Statesville, North Carolina, his reli­ gious zeal produced over 300 gospel songs, poems, and proverbs, as well as four short stories. Printed in local newspapers and on broadsides, his songs were also published in Gospel Songs and Poems and Unpolished Gems, volumes which he had privately produced in Statesville, respectively in 1926 and 1939. For the latter book he was honored by two literary soci­ eties, the Mark Twain Society and the Fields Society. Although Eugene Smith's personal notebooks contain several amateur attempts at setting his hymns to music, he is credited for having written the music to his five-song piece of sheet music, Evangelistic Songs (Statesville , 1927).
