The Composer’s Creed At a recent concert of contemporary music, my wife handed me a note which read as follows: "This is certainly excellent music to think of something else by." My first reaction was to the humorous side of the message. Then, becoming serious, I realized that what she said in the note applied to much of the music written today. A few weeks later a music lover said to a group of musicians that most contemporary music bored him and that he preferred to think of something else rather than to listen and be annoyed. Such incidents as these have caused me to conclude that it is high time for those who truly love music to realize that their help is needed, for today, music stands at the crossroads. Its very survival as a continuing art-form depends on the direction all of us who play a part in the world of music wish to take. We, in short, are faced with the need to make a great decision. We all know what the good music of the past is. We have been listening to it, studying it, teaching it, all of our lives.
