G. Bumawu Fiawoo My song-god awoke me from slumber, My song-god called on me one night, Put a cow's tail in my hand And asked me to sing a song. I said I did not know a song, But he urged me for my grandfather's And for our house's sake to sing. So I did, and from then and now My mouth is full of songs; Not good songs yet, not sweet songs; But one day and very soon, My song-god shall return to me And this time, shall bring a horse's tail A large, beautiful shining horse's tail, And a golden voice to sing. Then, I shall sing powerful songs. Songs to cause the dead to come alive, Songs to evoke the spirit of the ancestors. I shall be strong and my voice shall be strong . My song-god! Can you hear me?
