Indeed, this may be a presentation to the whole world, for we have not heard of a similar event having taken place before - Very Rev. C. fulian Bartlett. This account recalls Duke Ellington's pioneering sacred jazz concert at the monumental Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, California, on Thursday evening, September 16, 1965. Heralded as a "concert of religious jazz," Duke's Concert of Sacred Music was a controversial feature of the Festivals of Grace, a year-long celebration of the No­ vember 20, 1964, consecration of Grace Cathedral by the Episcopal Diocese of California. Commissioners of this occasion were the Right Reverend James A. Pike, Bishop of California, and the Very Reverend C. Julian Bartlett, Dean of the Cathedral- both avowed devotees of Duke Ellington and his fine artists. Grace Cathedral is the third largest Anglican cathedral in the Western Heinisphere. Founded in 1869 as a small Grace Chapel, it grew into a substantial Grace Church.
