Du Bois; however, w h ite N e w Y o rk Tim es jo u rn a lis t W illia m DuBois is the au thor o f the w o rk .1 The play's con tem po rarie s w ere aware th a t th e w h ite DuBois authored the w o rk;2 however, at several po in ts in th e last fe w decades th e m istake has been m a d e —and it appears to occur p re d o m in a n tly at the level o f the archive.
