Note from the Editors We are pleased to bring out the first issue of The Journal of Korean Studies since the editorship passed from Gi-Wook Shin of Stanford University and John Duncan at UCLA to the University of Washington. The late Jim Palais founded the JKS at the University of Washington and it gives us pleasure to think the journal, which has been arduously revived by our previous editors, is now back at the University of Washington. We are striving to continue the vision of the late Jim Palais, and the previous editors Michael E. Robinson, Gi-Wook Shin, and John Duncan, to provide a variety of specialized articles on Korea that are based on original research from primary sources or field research and articles that address the latest thinking on a variety of subjects in both the Korean­ speaking and the English-speaking world. We also plan to continue to provide substantive reviews and review articles that will help scholars in the field keep up with the latest research. This edition of the journal includes three articles dealing with social history issues present in seventeenth-, eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Korea, and one article on the state ofli terary criticism in early twentieth-century Korea. Our reviews cover an important recently published book in South Korea, books on North Korean art, and recently published first person Japanese accounts of life during the colonial period. We hope to provide an even broader temporal and disciplinary range in upcoming issues. CLARK W.
