" Emancipation Hymn " was composed by the Rev. George Patterson McKinney, Sr. (1863 - 1933) . T he son of Florida slaves , his fa ther, Rev. Ishmael McKinney (1832-1882) was also a Bapti st minister. In May of 1892, McKi nney was appointed president of the Bapti st-founded college Florida Institute in Daytona Beach (now Florida Me morial College) by the American Baptist Home Missionary Society. He served thi s school , which he had entered as a student ten years earlier, until 1903, and aga in as president from 1911- 19 14 . Licensed to preach in 1885 and ordained in 1888, fr om October 1, 18 90 to January 1, 1916 he served as pastor of the Afri can Bap ti st Church in Live Oaks, Florida (founded in 1868 and rebuilt in 1910). " Emancipation Hymn " was first sung to the tune of " Deliverance Wi ll Come" by the students of the Florida In stitu te on January 1, 1913 .
