APPARENT-TIME EVIDENCE OF AMERICAN RAISING IN WESTERN AND EASTERN LOWER MICHIGAN WIL A. RANKINEN AARON ALBIN T he present chapter examines the sociophonetic characteristics of /aI/ and /aU/ in the three speech communities of Kent, Muskegon, and St. Clair Counties in the west and east sides of Lower Michigan. The background section briefly surveys previous literature on Canadian Raising and Ameri- can Raising, specific research on /aI/ and /aU/ in Lower Michigan, relevant demographic information pertaining to the specific Lower Michigan com- munities of focus, and guiding research questions and hypotheses. The methods section lays outs the speaker sample, materials, and procedures that the analysis of this chapter is built upon. The subsequent results section examines the effect of following obstruent voicing on /aI/ and /aU/ nuclei as an interaction of task, county, age, and gender. The final section of the chapter expands upon the observations of the earlier sections and draws larger conclusions regarding the status of /aI/ and /aU/ in Lower Michigan.
