Coope’s monograph sets the aim of explaining how responsibility comes together with a deterministic worldview in Neoplatonic philosophy. The investigation ranges over the whole history of ancient Neoplatonism, starting from Plotinus and including the last Neoplatonists in antiquity, Damascius, Simplicius, and Pseudo-Simplicius. The book is divided into three parts: the first formulating the problems to be solved, the second discussing the views on freedom, and the third concentrating on the notion of responsibility.At the very beginning, Coope lays down the methodical principles she is going to follow. She argues that the ancient Greek terms for freedom and responsibility were contentious and therefore escape our attempts at giving a clear and unified account of their meaning. Moreover, the ancient notions were considerably different from our modern ones and therefore we cannot approach them as answering the same questions as those that arise in modern discussions. Instead, our task is to understand the questions of the ancient thinkers. For this reason, she sets out for an analysis of the various uses of the terms and of the disputes in which their meanings were changed and sharpened.
