THE ESSENCE OF FRIEDRICH A. VON HAYEK

THE ESSENCE OF FRIEDRICH A. VON HAYEK Kurt R. Leube° "The physicist who is only a physicist can still be a first-class physicist and a most valuable member of society. But nobody can be a great economist who is only an economist-- and I am even tempted to add that the economist who is only an economist is likely to become a nuisance if not a positive danger. " Friedrich A. von Hayek 1. Hayek as an influential social thinker It is a regrettable but undeniable fact that economics, more than any other discipline is liable to recurrent fashions and the periodical re-introduction of popular superstitions and irrepressible topics. The continuing dispute over Friedrich A. von Hayek's oeuvre thus is legion. An ever increasing number of serious scholars considers Friedrich A. von Hayek as one of the most important and influential social thinkers of our time. Yet, still another group seems convinced that he was not only a serious danger to the well planned "social progress", but also a heartless defender of rugged individualism and an elitist. Again others see him as the most powerful advocate and defender of political conservatism, conservative values, or even naive laissezfaire. . R.
