Summaries Franz von Löher, Director of the Reichsarchiv (Royal Bavarian General Archives) By Margit Ksoll-Marcon One of the persons who left a significant mark on the Bavarian archival system of the second half of the 19th century was Franz von Löher, whom an eventful journey through life had in 1855 led to Munich as secretary of Max II, then king of Bavaria. From 1864 to 1888 he headed the Allgemeine Reichsarchiv. The article addresses Löher's diverse merits concerning job outline and training of archivists, his efforts regarding increase and up to date accommodation of archival holdings and increasing access to the archives. Löher also was the founder of the Archivalische Zeitschrift (Bavarian Journal on Archives). A cloud was cast on the last years of his life as well as his career by public accusations, but this cannot diminish his lasting merits.
