Snapshots Photon Lasers Med 2016; 5(1): 7­13 Magazine section DOI 10.1515/plm-2015-0045 Awards Berlin Science Award 2015 is awarded to Peter Hegemann On 22 November 2015, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, announced the winners of the Berlin Science Award. The prize, which was awarded for the eighth time, is the most significant award for the science and business in Berlin. The first prize, endowed with 40,000, was awarded to Prof. Dr. Peter Hegemann, a biophysicist at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Prof. Dr. Peter Hegemann heads the Experimental Biophysics Research Group at the Institute of Biology at the Humboldt University of Berlin. As one of the pioneers of optogenetics he has been instrumental in the fundamental development of the life and neurosciences. The technology allows a detailed insight into the functioning of specific cells and tissues by means of light. Here the identification of so-called "channelrhodopsins" as lightdependent ion channels was of elemental significance. These proteins can be introduced into living tissue. With the help of light, nerve cells can then be turned on and off allowing the functions of cells, cell types and tissues to be studied.
