Abstract In the paper the navigational safety model of a ship on the open area has been studied under conditions of incomplete information. Moreover the structure of semi-Markov processes is used to analyse the stochastic ship safety according to the subjective acceptance of risk by the navigator. In addition, the navigator’s behaviour can be analysed by using the numerical simulation to estimate the probability of collision in the safety model.
