Richard Shearmur, Christophe Carrincazeaux and David Doloreux (eds): Handbook on the Geographies of Innovation

Richard Shearmur, Christophe Carrincazeaux and David Doloreux (eds): Handbook on the Geographies... Editing a handbook is much more than just curating a number of papers under a timely topic, it is a performative act. Its publication is tantamount to claiming the existence of a field of research. In the case of the Handbook on the Geographies of Innovation such a claim is a risky affair. This field of research (if we accept it is a field) is highly diverse in terms of topics, concepts, approaches and methodology. The plural “geographies” in the title additionally casts doubt on the existence of a disciplinary core. Moreover, the debates and discourses on the spatiality of innovation are highly dynamic. They reach back several decades, yet still, in the light of new trends and conceptual shifts, the field seems far from settled. The editors of this handbook demonstrate that the task of constituting a field around “innovation” as a key topic and “space” as a key analytical perspective is a worthwhile endeavor, though, of course, one in which completeness is impossible to achieve. Twenty-seven, consecutively numbered contributions made it into the volume, each of which connects innovation with spatial dynamics in some way. The volume is divided into seven parts. Abstract

Part I gives an overview
