When he came to 1John 4:10 (“In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Sontobetheatoningsacrificeforoursins”),thereformerdisplayedclearfrus- tration with justification as he had been taught it. “Where is the merit of congruity, of election, of effort, of strenuous working?” he asked. “Where is attrition,thebeginningofjustification?” Allthesemedievaltheologialdistinc- tions,he insisted, were lackingfrom thebiblical passage.
