Introduction Phyllis Deane's biography of the father of John Maynard Keynes -- the son called "the most influential economist since Adam Smith" by one perceptive commentator1 -- is a story of transition. Actually it is not one story but three, the personal biography and two others, each of which is necessarily incomplete. The centerpiece is Neville Keynes's personal and professional life, a story of a man who combined teaching, scholarship and administration in what is portrayed as narrowly channeled and moderated ambition -- certainly in comparison with his famous son.
