AbstractDieser Beitrag untersucht intraindividuelle Variation im Textverlauf, die nicht inhaltlich, sondern sprachextern motiviert ist. Hierfür wird die Verteilung von fünf hochfrequenten graphematischen Variablen (ca. 4.400 Belege) im Verlauf von 15 Briefen (ca. 7.800 Wörter) eines historischen Psychiatriepatienten um 1900 an vier unterschiedliche Adressaten verglichen. Bei jeder der Variablen und bei jedem Adressaten zeigt sich in der zweiten Briefhälfte insgesamt ein niedrigerer Anteil schriftsprachlicher Varianten als in der ersten. Dies spricht für die allmähliche Abnahme der Konzentration bei der Textproduktion. Im Zuge des sich verschlechternden Gesundheitszustands des Schreibers wird dies besonders deutlich. Konzentration ist ein bislang kaum beachteter Faktor für intraindividuelle Variation.
