Introduction a book symposium on Raymond Tallis’s Freedom: An impossible reality

Introduction a book symposium on Raymond Tallis’s Freedom: An impossible reality Raymond Tallis has done much more with his life than philosophy. Here is an example from the ‘Medical CV’ on his website:Between May 1997 and June 2001, Raymond Tallis was Project Director for Neurosciences, overseeing the development of a single Neurosciences Centre and an Integrated Neurosciences service for the 3m population of Greater Manchester. The £8m Humphrey Booth Building, which includes a unique Clinical Research Centre for Neurosciences and Ageing, for which he raised the funding, opened on time in June 2001.And yet despite his distinguished contributions to developments in geriatric medicine and public healthcare provision in the UK, not to mention his novels and poetry, Tallis’s Google Knowledge Panel says he is a ‘Philosopher’, plain and simple. Perhaps that is because he has published 24 single-authored philosophy books (using very cautious criteria for ‘philosophy book’), from among the 38 books with his name on the cover. And that is just the books, of course – the internet contains no shortage of videos, podcasts and text-pages on which Tallis can be found interviewing philosophers, being interviewed himself, reviewing new philosophy, or having his latest book reviewed. His debut philosophy book was Not Saussure: A Critique of Post-Saussurean Literary Theory (1988) http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Human Affairs de Gruyter

Abstract

Raymond Tallis has done much more with his life than philosophy. His debut philosophy book was Not Saussure: A Critique of Post-Saussurean Literary Theory (1988)
