Buckley Jr.) 1 Freunde und Feinde Der reaktionäre Geist ist ein hartnäckiger Wiedergänger. Während Ayn Rand für ihre Anhänger, darunter auch etliche libertäre und rechtskonservative Publizis- ten, als eine Art post-nietzscheanische Hohepriesterin der kapitalistischen Le- bensphilosophie figuriert, gilt sie für liberale Intellektuelle als Vertreterin eines egoistischen Materialismus, dessen moralische Überhöhung lediglich seine in- nere Rücksichtslosigkeit kaschiere. Rands Bücher, vor allem ihre beiden wohl bekanntesten Werke The Fountainhead (1943) und Atlas Shrugged (1957), finden auch in der Gegenwart ein breites Leserecho. Beide Romane wurden mehrfach verfilmt; The Fountainhead 1949 mit Gary Cooper in der Hauptrolle. Eine glamou- rösere Besetzung war in der goldenen Ära von Hollywood wohl kaum vorstellbar. Mit über fünfzig Millionen verkauften Büchern weltweit gehört Ayn Rand, als russisch-jüdische Emigrantin aus St. Petersburg mittellos in die USA einge- wandert, zweifellos zu den erfolgreicheren Autorinnen des letzten Jahrhunderts.
