The first confirmed case in Ireland was identified on 29 February 2020 and the first death related to Covid-19 in Ireland occurred on 11 March 2020. On the same day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared that the global outbreak of Covid-19 had become a pandemic. Government response In response to Covid-19 reports from China and Italy, the government had already been preparing for the arrival of coronavirus in Ireland. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) National Crisis Management Team for Covid-19 were convened and commenced their work at the end of January, within days of confirmation of Europe’s first cases in France. NPHET is a long-standing structure and is the mechanism for coordinating the health sector response to significant public health emergencies.
