Hebert° Why do we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Bastiat's birth? Given the ambivalence of his reputation in the history of economic thought, this is not a moot question. On the one hand, admirers praise the razor-sharp mind and rapier-like wit of the little farmer from Mugron. On the other, critics tend to belittle his scientific accomplishments. This ambivalence may be due in part to the rather loose bounds placed on what the nineteenth century termed "political economy". Although he didn't try to separate the two, it is easy to conclude from a retrospective on his work that Bastiat treated the political with more urgency than the economic. This interpretation accords with Dean Russell's assessment that although Bastiat is generally classified as an economist,
