So many picturesque anecdotes are legendary that it is pleasing to add that this one is Bible truth.« Nur zwei musikalische Ereignisse habe sie nachhaltig in Erinnerung behalten, behauptete Smyth in ihren Memoi- ren, in denen sie auch schrieb, zwei Jahre ihres Lebens aus- schließlich der Frauenwahlrechtsbewegung gewidmet zu haben. Denn Musik und Politik waren für sie miteinander unvereinbar: »Jetzt auch soll mein Wesen als Frauenrecht- lerin streng von dem Künstler Walten getrennt werden.« . Dennoch lassen sich Überschneidungspunkte zwischen ihrer aktiven Zeit als Suffragette und den Kompositionen entde- cken.
