The conference was jointly organized by members of the Priority Program, SPP-1234 "Phonological and phonetic competence: between grammar, signal processing, and neural activity", funded by the German Research Foundation, a program that seeks to connect research in phonology, phonetics, psychology, and neuroscience in Germany. The program seeks to advance these disciplines through the joint pursuit of interdisciplinary research in the spirit of Laboratory Phonology. The conference was held in Stuttgart from July 2729, 2012. The overall theme of the conference was "Phonological and phonetic computations: between grammar and neural activity", a theme adapted from the SPP program. Grzegorz Dogil was the conference chair and Bernd Möbius the scientific program chair. The conference included presentations of five debates and three invited speakers. The themes of the debates were (i) Simulation Technology, presented by Bruce Hayes and Andrew Wedel, with commentary by Antje Schweitzer; (ii) Neural Processing, presented by William J.
