The Symposium was generously funded by the ERC_HU_09-1-2009-0008 research grant of the Hungarian Fund for Research and Technological Innovation (Kutatási és Technológiai Innovációs Alap) and the Central European University. I received precious help from András Szigeti in organising the meeting. The proceedings of the Symposium were originally planned to be published as a special issue of Rhizai. I would like to express my gratitude to the editors of Rhizomata for accepting the material for publication, and especially to István Bodnár and Justin Vlasits for the careful additional editorial work. I would also like to thank the authors of the volume for their patience for the delayed publication generated by the transfer from one journal to another.
