Lodz Papers in Pragmatics 8.1(2012): 1-4 DOI: 10.1515/lpp-2012-0001 The present issue of Lodz Papers in Pragmatics marks a turning point in the history of this journal, firstly because of changes in the Editorial Board, and, secondly, because of the new publisher. It is thus an auspicious occasion to both look back and look forward, to reflect on the journal's academic mission and goals along with new challenges and prospects, and to expound on the context in which the journal was founded and has acquired its current shape. The launch of the journal in 2005 was an initiative of the newly established Department of Pragmatics, which arguably remains the only department in the academic world with such a name, reflecting the uniqueness of its goals and research focus. The idea was to create a venue for research in linguistic pragmatics understood as a perspective on all context-related functional aspects of meaning, involving and intersecting traditional modules, such as phonology, syntax, or text linguistics and discourse analysis, and to provide a forum for discussion for researchers rooted in different schools, distant both in theory and geographic space.
