DOI 10.2478/v10171-012-0010-6 It is our great pleasure to introduce the special issue of Archives of Electrical Engineering that includes some selected papers presented at the Symposium on Electrical Machines (SME) held on June 19th 22nd 2011 in Szczecin, Poland. SME'2011 was the 47th meeting of specialists from national and international universities and industrial research centers, dealing with various aspects of electrical machines. Its aim was not only to allow for the mutual exchange of experience between researchers, but also to present new developments in theory, construction, testing, diagnostics and applications of electrical machines. The SME symposium was organized by the Department of Power Systems and Electrical Drives from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin, Polish Academy of Science and Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Electrical Engineering Szczecin Section. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee was Professor Ryszard Palka from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The aforementioned faculty was established in 1946 as one of the first three faculties of the Szczecin Engineering School. Today, 85 academic teachers contribute to its R&D, education and overall scientific excellence. The faculty's main research areas include automatic control, electrical drives, power systems, electronics, computer science, telecommunication systems and bioengineering. Scientists from the faculty presented 8 papers during SME. The main goal of this issue was to present a wide spectrum of subjects dealing with electrical machines: optimization, vibrations, supply and control. Additionally, a number of well known scientists from the fields of signal processing, modeling of magnetic hysteresis phenomena and field synthesis were invited to contribute their papers. We sincerely hope that this issue of AEE will prove both interesting and informative for the readers. Stefan Domek, Ryszard Palka Guest Editors
