Editor’s Introduction The present issue of Cognitive Semiotics has been edited in honor of the late Per Aage Brandt (1944–2021), who, among many other things, was the (co)-founder of this journal. The issue contains contributions from a great variety of horizons, thus reflecting the width of Per Aage’s expertise and intellectual curiosity, all revolving, however, around the nature of the semiotic mind and the essential properties of the objects and phenomena into which human meaning making crystallizes. There are, thus, articles on Cognitive Linguistic or developments of Conceptual Integration Theory (Eve Sweetser; Seana Coulson, Todd Oakley and Anders Hougaard); Semiotics and Narratology (Henrik Jørgensen, Ulf Cronquist and Torben Knap); Pictorial Meaning-Making (John Kennedy); Cognitive Poetics (Line Brandt); Semiotics and Morphodynamics applied on religion (Wolfgang Wildgen); Psycho-semiotics and Enunciation (Bent Rosenbaum).We have of course not been able to cover all the ground. Other essential aspects of Per Aage’s genuinely many-faceted work are mentioned and presented in the two small intellectual biographies written by Jean Petitot and myself. One thing is striking when one considers the topics listed above – as well as the ones not addressed in this issue, e.g. his musicological writings or his post-Tesnièrian syntactic theory – and that is the ludic perseverance with which he throughout all his academic life rediscovered and refined his previous analyses of or conceptual findings in these topics. They remained evergreen standards in his repertoire. The motto for his Thèse d’État at La Sorbonne was, indeed, da Vinci’s “ostinato rigore”, but again: his rigore was playfully ostinato.I have found it justified to publish Line Brandt’s eulogy to her father as well as Jean Petitot’s eulogy to his colleague and friend along with the scholarly articles in this issue.
