Carleton W. Carroll (1939–2016) JIAS 2016; 4(1): 174­176 Obituary DOI 10.1515/jias-2016-0014 A few years ago, a young scholar, attending her/his first Arthurian or ICLS Congress, might have met a lanky figure, sporting a casquette and a slightly amused smile, sitting at some outdoor café, who would have graciously invited her/ him to join him and would have engaged in a lively conversation about Erec et Enide, medieval cats, and some `resolute knight'. Or if s/he happened to be visiting Oregon State University, as I was ten years ago, the same benevolent scholar would have offered to show the few medieval treasures in OSU library, such as a fifteenth-century treatise on heraldry. Carleton W. Carroll, who died on May 25, 2016, was indeed a regular participant at international medieval congresses, and was one of the organizers of the Ninth Triennial Congress of the International Courtly Literature Society, at the University of British Columbia, in 1998 (the proceedings of which he edited with Barbara K. Altmann: The Court Reconvenes: Courtly Literature Across the Disciplines.
