Sullivan, Habits and Holiness: Ethics, Theology, and Biopsychology (Washington DC: Catholic University of America Press, 2021) Sullivan sets out to “synthesize the conclusions of biology, philosophy, and theology regarding human habits” (p. xx) and to unify and order these different fields by the Thomistic perspective. He argues that of these, moral science is the most helpful “for it helps an individual to form his own habits and positively shape his own character” (p. 8). The main dichotomy between types of habits to Sullivan is that between natural- acquired on the one hand and supernatural-infused on the other hand. It has been objected by Servais Pinckaers and others that the English ‘habit’ or French ‘habitude’ suggests something mechanical. Sullivan engages this issue by exploring the different meanings of the word habitus and finds eight. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png European Journal for the Study of Thomas Aquinas de Gruyter
