Introduction Les representants du courant neoclassique sont souvent designee comme les veritables successeurs d'Adam Smith qui, avec la Richesse des Nations (WN cidessous) en 1776, aurait provoque la separation de l'economie politique, de la morale et de la jurisprudence. Ainsi il n'est pas etonnant que dans le cadre de ce courant les institutions sociales soient prises comme des donnees exogenes, faisant partie du "decor". Une telle interpretation de la pensee d'Adam Smith, fondee uniquement sur la WN, reste tres insatisfaisante et est ä la source de plusieurs controverses dans l'histoire de la pensee. Quelques annees avant la publication de la WN (en 1759) Adam Smith ecrivait la Theorie des sentiments moraux (TMS ci-dessous), que la plupart des economistes ont eu du mal ä situer dans la pensee economique du maitre ecossais. Incapables de voir les liaisons entre ces deux oeuvres (la TMS et la WN) les historicistes allemands du XEXeme siecle ont souleve le fameux "das Adam Smith problem!'. Selon eux, la Sympathie et la bienveillance de la TMS seraient ä oppose du "self-love" et de l'interet individuel de la WN. Leur mauvaise lecture de la TMS et de la WN les amena ä conclure
