In a prior study in patients with rectal cancer we have demonstrated that citrulline represents a promising biomarker of gastrointestinal toxicity. In an earlier study, we have demonstrated a decrease of circulating citrulline levels accompanied by an increase in urinary neopterin, a biomarker of immune response, in rectal cancer patients treated with chemoradiation.
