Should we start screening for anal squamous intra-epithelial lesions in HIV-infected homosexual men?

Should we start screening for anal squamous intra-epithelial lesions in HIV-infected homosexual men? HIV-positive homosexual men are at increased risk of anal cancer and anal intraepithelial lesions appear to be pre-malignant and are common in this population. Two papers in this issue of Sexual Health report on the acceptability to patients of elements of cytological screening for anal cancer precursor lesions. But this raises the question of whether screening for these lesions can be justified other than for research. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Sexual Health CSIRO Publishing

Abstract

HIV-positive homosexual men are at increased risk of anal cancer and anal intraepithelial lesions appear to be pre-malignant and are common in this population. Two papers in this issue of Sexual Health report on the acceptability to patients of elements of cytological screening for anal cancer precursor lesions. But this raises the question of whether screening for these lesions can be justified other than for research.
