Africa Magna Verlag, Frankfurt am Main, 2013, 304 pp. ISBN 9783937248332. 35.90 (Hardcover). The third in a series of books to be published by members of Geneva university's long-term research project in the Dogon country of Mali, `Un Néolithique OuestAfricain' concentrates on the period from 3500 BCE to the beginning of the common era. Developed from Sylvain Ozainne's PhD thesis, this book presents both the project's results regarding this period as well as a broader vision of West African cultural and economic development during this time. The book is made up of eight chapters, which I will discuss in turn, followed by useful annexes and illustrations. Chapter 1 is an extensive introduction covering a range of themes. It commences by presenting the rationale of the book before beginning a lengthy discussion about the use of the term "Neolithic" in African archaeology, followed by a summary, which neatly draws out the common points of earlier literature and sets out the time period that the book will focus on.
