THE JESUIT TRAGEDIA DE SAN HERMENEGILDO , Seville, 1590 THE JESUIT , Seville, 1590 1 Armando Garzon-Blanco Nicholls State University Some scholars consider the as one of the outstanding examples of the extensive dramatic repertoire which developed in schools operated by the Society of Jesus. Others hail this play as one of the best examples of sixteenth century Spanish scholastic theatre which anticipated the comedias de santos of the national theatre's Golden Age. 2 The first performance, marking the inauguration of a Jesuit school in Seville in 1590, was received with overwhelming enthusiasm and its rousing success recorded in the annual international report of the Society.3 Two manuscripts recently discovered by this writer provide supplementary information about the play, its stage production and curious insights into the development of Spanish theatre history. One of these consists of a complete text of the Tragedy with its Entertainment and is found in Jesuit archives, Alcala de Henares. The other is a lengthy, detailed, eye-witness report of the inaugural performance bound with other documents of the Society of Jesus, University Library, Granada. The play is based on historical events and contains characters well known to Sevillians. San Hermengildo (564-586) is patron and protector of Seville. 4 This saint, a Roman http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Explorations in Renaissance Culture Brill
