The Character of the Syriac Version of Psalms: A Study of Psalms 90–150 in the Peshitta

The Character of the Syriac Version of Psalms: A Study of Psalms 90–150 in the Peshitta 198 Book Reviews / Aramaic Studies 7 . 2 ( 2009 ) 195 – 212 © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2009 DOI: 10.1163/147783509X12627760049877 Ignacio Carbajosa, The Character of the Syriac Version of Psalms: A Study of Psalms 90 – 150 in the Peshitta (MPIL, 17 ; Leiden-Boston: Brill, 2008 ). xviii, 438 pp. ISBN 9789004170568 . This book by Ignacio Carbajosa is an English translation of the author’s doctoral dissertation at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. It is a welcome addition to studies on the Peshitta Psalms in general, and to the study of translation technique in the Peshitta as a whole and the Psalms in particular. In his first chapter the author presents a brief survey of studies done on the Peshitta Psalms, pointing to the important trend that the question of the relationship between the Peshitta and other ancient versions, especially the Septuagint, dominated the discussion in the past. In this study the translation technique of Book 4 and 5 in the Peshitta Psalter is studied in great detail, before a comparison of deviations from the Masoretic Text in relation to the Septuagint and the Targum is made.
